OUR PRACTITIONERS

JACQUELINE COOPER
Director/
Occupational Therapist

Jacqueline leads the Health Central team at Currumbin.  Her interest in soft tissue treatment started during her study at the University of Queensland. This is where she met Laurie Farrow who facilitated the soft tissue injury management courses. Following the completion of her studies, Jacqueline worked in neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation in Brisbane’s St Andrews Private Hospital before working for Brisbane Occupational Therapy Services. Here she branched into vocational rehabilitation and soft tissue, treating workers from various industries including mining, factories and laboratories and several sporting teams including state league netballers.

Adding to her experience in musculoskeletal injuries she gained a more in-depth understanding of the impact of injury on function through her work in England. Jacqueline worked for the National Health Service managing integrated community rehabilitation programs. Whilst overseas, Jacqueline completed a course in Manual Medicine and Developmental Sports Kinesiology through Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Under the guidance of Professor Lewit, Dr Kobesoba and Dr Kolar who are considered world experts in the field, Jacqueline refined her understanding of the neuro-developmental aspects of common injuries.

Upon her return to Australia, Jacqueline worked as a consultant treating private patients and employees from a variety of industries including, local council, corporate companies, small businesses and the Gold Coast cricket team.

Outside of her clinic work at Health Central, Jacqueline lectures in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Soft Tissue Injury Management at James Cook University. She is also an active Board Member of Occupational Therapy Australia QLD.

CLAIRE CANNING
Occupational Therapist

Claire joined Health Central from Townsville where she studied at James Cook University. Following her degree, Claire consulted in a work rehabilitation setting completing pre-employment screening, work site visits and ergonomic assessments. Her work also involved prescribing suitable equipment for patient use. Claire later established an Occupational Therapy seating clinic which specialised in recommendations for suitable equipment, home visits and supplying the equipment. She developed particular expertise in advising on, and measuring for wheelchairs.

Whilst consulting from the seating clinic, Claire worked in Townsville Hospital in the Fit for Surgery program. She assisted patients in preparation for hip and knee surgery and in their rehabilitation. Following postgraduate studies in Soft Tissue Injury Management, Claire recognised the strong need for its inclusion in occupational therapy treatment, and so established her own business. Claire has treated people with a variety of conditions including sporting injuries, hand injuries and those with complex debilitating conditions.
